About us
Co-founded by Rocco A. Ortenzio and Robert A. Ortenzio in 1996, Select Medical started as a regional provider of outpatient physical rehabilitation. In 1997, the company expanded its services to include contract therapy, followed by the launch of long-term acute care in 1998. In 1999, Select Medical made a major expansion by acquiring NovaCare Physical Rehabilitation and Occupational Health, one of the company’s largest acquisitions to date.

Within just three years, Select Medical grew from a small start-up into a diversified health care company with a national presence. This strategic yet responsible growth contributed to the company being recognized by Forbes as one of the “Best Managed Companies in America.”
In April 2001, Select Medical completed its initial public offering and was listed on NASDAQ. Fourteen months later, the company moved to the New York Stock Exchange, trading under the ticker symbol SEM. In 2004, the acquisition of the renowned Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation expanded the company’s services to include inpatient medical rehabilitation, a care line that continues to grow through joint ventures and partnerships with leading names in medicine.
Over 25 years later, Select Medical now operates across three core areas: critical illness recovery, inpatient medical rehabilitation, and outpatient physical therapy, all supported by over 45,000 skilled healthcare professionals nationwide.
